Je gr\u00f6\u00dfer die erntereifen Fr\u00fcchte am Ende werden, umso st\u00e4rker muss man sie zuvor ausd\u00fcnnen. Deshalb hackt den Boden rund um den Baumstamm und bedeckt dann die Baumscheibe mit feuchtem Torfmull oder Torfersatz; dazu eignet sich z.B. gepresste Kokosfaser, ein Abfallprodukt aus der Kopraplantage. Die zu Ballen gepressten Kokosfasern werden in hei\u00dfem Wasser gel\u00f6st, bis der Ballen vollst\u00e4ndig aufgel\u00f6st ist und sich eine w\u00e4ssrig-dicke Suspension aus Kokosmull gebildet hat. Der wird nun gleichm\u00e4\u00dfig auf der Baumscheibe verteilt. Frisch gesetzte B\u00e4ume und Str\u00e4ucher muss man im Sommer regelm\u00e4\u00dfig w\u00e4ssern, ebenso \u00e4ltere B\u00e4ume bei l\u00e4nger anhaltender Trockenheit. Auch der Wasserbedarf von Weinst\u00f6cken und Obstspalieren, die an Hausw\u00e4nden hochgezogen werden, ist hoch, da der Boden vor der Wand selten genug Regen abbekommt. Fr\u00fcher hat man Aluminumstreifen in die B\u00e4ume geh\u00e4ngt, um Amseln und andere Singv\u00f6gel vom Obst fernzuhalten.
