Vermutlich ist sie durch Bastardieung verschiedener Iris-Arten im \u00f6stlichen Mittelmeerraum entstanden. Dort, im Mittelmeergebiet, bildet sie fruchtbare Samen, bei uns ist sie dagegen steril und l\u00e4sst sich vegetativ vermehren, indem man ihr Rhizom teilt.<br \/>\nDas Rhizom der Bart-Iris ist dick und stark verzweigt. Bereits kurz nach der Bl\u00fcte bilden sich am Rhizom neue, feine Wurzeln, die f\u00fcr das weitere Gedeihen der Pflanze sehr wichtig sind. Damit sie nicht abbrechen oder besch\u00e4digt werden, muss man die Schwertlilien sehr vorsichtig ausgraben und von anhaftender Erde durch Sch\u00fctteln und Abklopfen befreien. Mit einem scharfen Messer teilt man nun das Rhizom und zwar so, dass immer ein oder zwei der jungen Seitentriebe des Rhizoms mit einem alten Rhizomst\u00fcck verbunden blieben. Obwohl sich nur aus den jungen, neuen Rhizomteilen wieder neue, kr\u00e4ftige Schwertlilien bilden k\u00f6nnen. Um Pilzinfektionen zu vermeiden, sollte man die Wundfl\u00e4chen mit etwas Holzkohlepulver desinfizieren. Nun setzt man die Rhizome horizontal und flach in den Boden und bedeckt sie mit einer d\u00fcnnen Schicht frischer Erde, so dass<br \/>\nder obere Rhizomteil muss noch sichtbar bleiben.<br \/>\nAm besten w\u00e4hlt man einen sonnigen und trockenen Standort. Iris wachsen auch auf kargem, n\u00e4hrstoffarmem Boden, nur Staun\u00e4sse vertragen Bart-Iris gar nicht. Die Iris germanica-Hybriden kommen praktisch das ganze Jahr ohne D\u00fcngergaben und Gie\u00dfen aus. Werden die Pflanzen zu sehr ged\u00fcngt, dann kann das Rhizom faulen.
