Sie bl\u00fchen bis zu den ersten Fr\u00f6sten und brauchen die Herbstzeit, um gen\u00fcgend Reservestoffe f\u00fcr den Winter in ihren Knollen zu speichern. Leichter Frost schadet ihnen nicht, solange nur die oberirdischen Pflanzenteile verdorren und abfrieren und die frostigen Temperaturen nicht in den Boden bis zu den Dahlienknollen vordringen. Dann aber wird es Zeit, mit dem Umzug ins Winterquartier zu beginnen.<br \/>\nZuerst werden alle Triebe bis handbreit \u00fcber dem Erdboden abgeschnitten. Dann wird die Staude vorsichtig mit der Grabgabel umstochen und dann der Wurzelballen herausgehoben. Lose anh\u00e4ngende Erde wird vorsichtig abgesch\u00fcttelt. Aber nicht die Knollen blitzblank sauber scheuern oder abwaschen. Die restliche, noch anhaftende Erde kann die Pflanze vor dem Austrocknen sch\u00fctzen. Die Knollen werden mit Etiketten versehen, damit man im kommenden Fr\u00fchjahr noch wei\u00df, aus welchen knollen welche Dahliensorte sprie\u00dfen wird. Eine Obststiege aus Holz oder Pappe wird mit Papier ausgeschlagen und dann die Knollen in lockeren Abst\u00e4nden nebeneinander gelegt. Dann das Ganze mit m\u00e4\u00dfig feuchtem Sand oder Torf abdecken, damit sie nicht austrocknen. Optimal als Winterquartier w\u00e4re ein dunkler, frostfreier Kartoffelkeller mit Temperaturen um die 5 Grad Celsius.
