The term plant refers to a living being, which is one of the most important realms of life on Earth, in addition to humans and animals. The number of plants around the world can only be estimated and is expected to span hundreds of thousands of species, many tens of thousands of which are estimated to be extinct. Plants differ in many basic traits of humans and animals, but as well as these have growth, reproduction and response to external stimuli of all kinds. In particular, the principles of plant propagation are manifold, with most species having an alternating effect of sexual and vegetative reproduction. Plants, especially in the form of green plants and their ability to photosynthesize, play an indispensable role in human life, as plants of this species provide for constant conversion of carbon dioxide into oxygen. In addition to their importance as a crop and food flowering plants also a special, aesthetic role is considered, which is described in the field of floristics and exploited, for example, by the composition of bouquets and flower arrangements. The scientific consideration of plants, regardless of their aesthetic value or their benefit for humans and animals, is summarized under the name of botany.
